Travel documents required for Canadian citizens to enter the United States currently depend on whether you enter the United States by air or you enter by land or water.

Canadian Citizens Entering the U.S. by Air

Since January 23, 2007, Canadian citizens entering or transiting the United States by air must show a valid Canadian passport or use a NEXUS card at a NEXUS kiosk. This includes children.

Canadian Citizens Entering the U.S. by Land or Water

Effective January 31, 2008, Canadian citizens, including children, travelling to the United States by land or by water must show

  • a government-issued photo ID, such as a drivers licence, and a Canadian birth certificate or citizenship card;

    or

  • a valid Canadian passport;

    or

  • a NEXUS or FAST card;

    or

  • an enhanced drivers licence;

    or

  • an Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card;

    or

  • if 18 years old and under, a birth certificate.
